The Estevan Drag Racing Association (EDRA) first held drag races at the Estevan Municipal Airport, five miles north of Estevan, in 2003. After a few years the group began talking about building its own strip, since setting up and tearing down the equipment at the airport for every event was a burden. It got as far as acquiring a hundred acres directly north of Estevan Motor Speedway on the Shand Power Station Access Road, southeast of town, and in 2011 it hired funny car driver Ron Colson to help plan the strip. Races ran at the airport each summer through 2014 but not in 2015, when the runways were being repaved. IHRA sanctioned the races in some of the later years. Every year brought hope of a new strip, and every year that hope seemed a little dimmer.
