Wayne Thibodeaux, who ran the small Espanola airstrip, was letting drag racers use the landing strip by mid-1980 at the latest. That angered city and airport commission officials, who threatened to cancel his lease if the racing didn’t stop. The field is now Ohkay Owingeh Airport.
