In 1954, E. B. McCune of Wetumpka ran a crop-dusting business off the Elmore Field airstrip, thirteen miles north of Montgomery on Highway 45. The runway is where Wetumpka Municipal Airport sits today, near Elmore. In 1955 the Outlaw Motorcycle Club of Montgomery held quarter-mile drag races for cars and motorcycles on the runway, the first drag strip in Alabama. Racing may have started in late 1954, since newspapers described a January 30, 1955 meet as another in a series of drag races. There were five car classes and six motorcycle classes, with trophies for the winners. On March 6, 1955, Edward Chambless set a strip record of 13.12 seconds on a Harley-Davidson, and Fred Clark of Montgomery won the Full Modified class with a 19.00.
