In the mid-1950s Billy Helms and Andrew Hall ran drag races at Wrightsville. In 1956 they also held races at the airport three miles northwest of Dublin that is now called W. H. “Bud” Barron Airport. The field had been in use since the 1930s, and Barron ran a flying school there in the 1940s.
