Douglas Municipal Airport, near the center of town, closed in the mid-1980s after a new airport was built north of Douglas. Drag racing then started in the summers on its 5,000-foot asphalt runway, with the starting line at the west end and the strip running northwest to southeast. It opened as Douglas International Raceway and soon became Douglas International Speedway. In 1987 it hosted a three-day NHRA regional sportsman race that drew more than 300 racers, and the event returned in 1988. In 1989 it was called Jackalope Raceway. The track ran under NHRA sanction during its life. The city owned the land and had leased it year to year for the last five years, so the closing was no surprise, and the site is to be developed for commercial and residential use.
