Helen, James and Thomas Kohn filed incorporation papers for this strip on May 24, 1963, and James Kohn owned and ran it. It was on Wetumpka Highway across from the former Gunter Air Force Base Annex. Traces of the old strip, running up through the woods along the west side of today’s Gorman Park, show on aerial photos. The name Dixie-Southland comes from a 1968 list of 325 U.S. drag strips in the Swedish magazine Start & Strip. Cars raced over about 1,000 feet, and the whole track was no more than 2,500 feet long. It ran south to north, which is easy to see from the starting-line rubber marks on 1972 aerial photos. When it closed hasn’t been found.
