This strip’s first race was July 7, 1957. Newspaper ads, with confusing directions, put it ten miles north of Burlington past the intersection of Burch Bridge and Stoney Creek Church Roads. Lisa Kobrin, a reference librarian at Burlington’s May Memorial Library, said most strips in the area were around Altamahaw because it was outside any town limits, and that Burlington had outlawed drag racing in late February 1957. Spectators paid 90 cents, and races ran every Sunday. The 1957 Burlington city directory listed Claude W. Dodd, a mechanic at Lloyd Motor Service, as the strip’s contact.
