About one hundred racers were expected for a drag race at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds on Thursday night, August 6, 1959. At least two earlier races had been held, and at least one more followed in September. The International Timing Association put them on. Richard Clayton and Bill Ellis had each won top eliminator at earlier races.
