The Dakota Drag Racing Club, formed in 1998, held its first race on an airport taxiway in 1999, with 108 entries and about 3,000 spectators. Races were timed over an eighth-mile. There was no race in 2000 because the airport was closed for renovations. A second race ran on August 26, 2001, the FAA approved one for June 30, 2002, and another was held on June 24, 2006.
Background
The airport is now Dickinson Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport, owned by the Dickinson Airport Authority and six miles south of town. It serves western North Dakota and nearby parts of Montana and South Dakota, with SkyWest flying United Express jets to Denver.
