History
The strip’s official website says it opened in 1963. Newspaper coverage of the early races is thin, but 2,200 spectators were reported at one race in 1963. The first newspaper ad found was for a race on May 10, 1964, and the grand opening was a two-day event on May 30-31, 1964, with Super Stocks and match races. Bill Cathell owned and managed the strip. In 1964 races ran on Friday nights and Sundays, and Sonny Cox, Dick Smith, Kenny Mills and Gene Wharton won often.
Background
US 13 Dragway runs under IHRA sanction on a 3,600-foot track with seating for about 2,700. It shares the Delmar property with its sister oval, Delaware International Speedway.
