The Desert Draggers, a Reno hot rod club formed in 1951, ran a series of races in 1953 on a quarter-mile strip they had just taken over at the Silver Springs Airstrip, about sixteen miles east of Dayton on Highway 50. Races were held on June 21, July 5 and July 19, 1953. Spectators got in free, and racers paid entry fees. Leo and Aldo Teglia were quickest with a 14.57 in their Mercury-powered roadster. By 1954 the club had a new, better timer, and entry fees paid for trophies for every class winner. Bill Ewers had top speed at 107.14 MPH in his Mercury-powered ‘34 Ford on June 13, 1954, and was fastest again two weeks later at 106.45 MPH. In summer the club raced on a dry lake north of Reno.
