In 1963 the Pacemakers Automobile Club held monthly races at the fairgrounds, billed as the “Go & Whoa” drag races after the venue. Red Nevins won Class A in his Ford in 8.9 seconds on February 3, 1963. Ten years later, on Sunday, April 22, 1973, the High Plains Auto Club ran eighth-mile races there. A second race on May 27 drew 75 entries from Texas and New Mexico, and Richard Simms of Hereford, Texas, won the modified division with a 7.58 in his national-record ‘69 Corvette, “Rapid Rat.” By the July 29 race the track had NHRA sanction and paid prize money to eliminator winners. New lights were used starting August 26. Racing has only been found in 1973 for that later period.
