In the mid-1960s Reymundo “el Rey” Sandoval organized Club Aceleración Juarense to hold drag races on the internationally disputed land between El Paso and Juárez, as a venture in international cooperation in racing. A man who went once remembered a new paved road lined on both sides with young, evenly spaced cottonwood trees, and said only a few races were held. The United States acquired the land on October 28, 1967, in the exchange of parcels agreed in the Chamizal Convention of 1963, and it is now a National Monument. Despite the name, it wasn’t really an island. The land lay on both sides of the current channel of the Rio Grande.
