History
Builders spent $60,000 on a 4,000-foot asphalt strip just north of the Mississippi River town of Cordova. They called it Quad City Drags after the nearby metro area spanning northwest Illinois and southeast Iowa, whose main cities are Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa and Rock Island, Moline and East Moline in Illinois. It opened with a two-day meet on September 2-3, 1956, and raced every Sunday after that. Before August 1957 the track record was 152.54 mph, set by Warren Poole of Muscatine, Iowa.
Cordova hosted the ATAA’s fourth annual World Series of Drag Racing on August 21-25, 1957, which drew more than 20,000 spectators and 400 entries. Red Greth of Tucson set a world record for competition roadsters at 160.71 mph in 9.77 seconds, and world record holder Emory Cook won top eliminator with a track record of 163.63 mph. The World Series came back on August 20-24, 1958, when John Bradley of San Bernardino set a world mark of 151.26 mph in his Mercury flathead B dragster, and again on August 26-30, 1959. A record 15,000 fans attended the final day of the World Series on August 26, 1962. On July 27, 1963, almost 5,000 people watched Art Arfons make three runs over 211 mph in his jet dragster. The 12th annual World Series on August 26-29, 1965, paid a $15,000 cash purse.
