Butte’s mayor, police, sheriff, highway patrol and other officials let the Copper City Road Angels car club use the road to the Butte Trap and Skeet Club range, six miles south of the city near Highway 10, for drag racing. The club was grateful but kept looking for a place with room for pits and spectator facilities. The Road Angels, helped by the Lifters car club, held a free race on 5-Mile Gun Club Road on October 14, 1956.
