William Cooley built Cooley Field, a private airport on a peninsula jutting into San Francisco Bay, around 1946. It was dirt until about 1949, when the 2,000-foot east-west runway was paved. A couple of old-timers remember drag races there around 1952, though old newspapers make no mention of them. One recalled the drag strip at the north end of the San Carlos airport and going to the drags there in 1952 or 1953, separate from the motorcycle races he attended at Belmont. Another went to his first drag race at Cooley Field in 1952 at 16, riding with a friend whose 1934 Plymouth had a 1946 Hudson engine. Nothing remains of the airport, and the whole area has changed.
