Six hot rod clubs from the Indianapolis area and elsewhere in the state formed the Southern Indiana Timing Association with guidance from the Automobile Timing Association of America. They scheduled races at the old Atterbury Army Airfield. Newspapers didn’t name the airport outright, but the 4,800-foot strip they described points to it. NHRA rules were to govern the racing. On April 25, 1954, sports cars held a drag meet at the air base, where 55 cars competed and Mark Dietsch of Columbus, Ohio, won in a Cad-Allard.
