In late 1951 the Cam Winders car club of Colorado Springs got some flat ranch land from the Pring brothers to build a drag strip. A couple of Colorado Springs traffic officers helped, after getting their chief’s approval in August 1951 to sponsor a hot rod club, and townspeople donated to the project. Within eight months the club had more than 100 members. At the site, four miles northeast of Colorado Springs, they graded the ground, poured used motor oil on the 1.2-mile strip and let it harden over the winter. The first race on the oiled dirt was held around late 1952 and drew about 3,500 spectators. Willie Young had the meet’s top time, 94.33 mph, in Bill Kenz’s 1932 Ford roadster. Hot Rod Magazine covered it in February 1953 (pages 34-35 and 52).
