On August 8, 1954, a thousand spectators watched 48 entries race on an airport taxi strip. It was the first race by the new Astoria Chinooks car club, which had 34 members, thirteen of whom raced and six of whom placed. Club president was Ed Bornholm. Don Fancher had the fastest speed, 113.89 mph. The PA system and the timer both failed early on but were fixed. The club paid $400 for insurance and broke even. It was the only drag race at the airport, though a stock car race had run there a month earlier.
