NHRA-sanctioned drag races were held on a runway at Childress Municipal Airport, four miles west of Childress. The first race found was on Sunday, April 18, 1965. The Childress Volunteer Fire Department sponsored the races, with trophies for class winners. On August 8, 1965, 500 people watched Raybern Ott win Street Eliminator with a 13.03 at 107.52 MPH. In 1967 races ran on the second Sunday, with Charles Mock managing the track. A 1968 list of U.S. drag strips in the Swedish magazine Start & Strip included it.
