At a city hall meeting on April 5, 1955, the Road Runners car club got preliminary approval to race at Chickasha Municipal Airport, two miles north of town, under eight rules written for the purpose. A two-day NHRA-sanctioned race followed on September 10-11, 1955, sponsored by car clubs from Chickasha, Lawton and Duncan. Jack Moss had the fastest time, 138.50 mph in his Dodge-powered dragster, the Ramblin Ram. In 1956 the Chickasha Road Runners, backed by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, asked to use the runway for six races.
