This one-mile NASCAR-sanctioned dirt oval, midway between Orlando and Sanford, started holding drag races open to spectators after its regular program on August 13, 1954. It sat on the site of the Seminole Park Speedway, an oval unused since 1947, and racing there went back to the 1920s. The drag races were popular and ran weekly through the 1954 season, with calcium chloride spread to keep down the dust. The operators said the track would seat 3,500 when it opened. The Orlando Evening Star’s directions said to turn east at the Sanford Orlando Kennel Club on Highway 17-92 and go a short way, but the track was actually about five miles east of the Kennel Club.
