The Alamo Timing Association held the first drag race at Castroville on February 10, 1957. Spectators paid a $1 donation, and $1,000 of the proceeds went to the polio and March of Dimes charities. 2,500 people watched 230 entries, and Bobby Joe Rutledge won top eliminator at 123.11 MPH in his Ardun-Merc. The turnout raised hopes for monthly racing, but the next race on record was October 27, 1957, which Drag News billed as a grand opening under AHRA sanction for gas and fuel classes. The strip, 22 miles west of Castroville on U.S. Highway 90, was 150 feet wide and 5,280 feet long. On March 23, 1958, Schrank & Rodriguez set a speed record of 143.31 MPH in their DeSoto-powered dragster, though only 24 cars were entered.
