Drag races were scheduled at the airport for November 2, 1958, as part of the Nevada Day celebration, with plans to keep racing afterward as long as the weather held. In 1959 the Nevada Timing Association raced on the second and last Sunday of each month, opening on May 17 with Warren Welsh taking top eliminator in his gas dragster before about 900 spectators. The racing runway had been resurfaced and the return road oiled to keep the dust down. Racing was over the quarter mile, but half-mile events were under consideration. On August 2, 1959, Welsh won top eliminator again with an 11.187 at 139.53 MPH in his Lee’s Body Shop Special. On September 6, the Carston brothers of Reno had the day’s best speed, 100.33 MPH, in their 1929 Ford Model A roadster.
