With the town council’s approval, drag racing started on a runway at the Carrizozo airport in 1995. The Drag Club ran it as an NHRA-sanctioned quarter-mile track on the third Sunday of each month from March through November. The opener was set for March 26 but was delayed to April 16, 1995. The club put in bleachers, fences, guardrails and a timing tower. The “Mexican Jumping Bean” wheelstander made exhibition runs in August 1995. The 1997 season ended early when the council decided not to renew the Drag Club’s contract for 1998.
Background
The Town of Carrizozo owns the airport and keeps it open for public use. It's a general aviation field one nautical mile northwest of downtown.
