The Cheapskate’s Automotive Club held the first drag race here on July 28, 1957. A race to benefit the Brown County Community Chest was planned for October 6, 1957, just west of the National Guard Fieldhouse (or Northeast Fieldhouse), at 25 cents for spectators and $1 per race car. The 1958 season opened on March 9 on the quarter-mile track northeast of the Fieldhouse. In April 1958 the Brown County sheriff’s office was getting complaints about unauthorized racing on the strip, and officers warned that if it kept up, the strip could be closed for good.
