Quarter-mile drag racing started in 2002 in a parking area just north of the D-shaped California Speedway oval. The speedway opened in 1997 as California Speedway, and the strip likewise opened as California Dragway. Both changed names in 2008 when the Automobile Club of Southern California became title sponsor. Noise complaints from neighbors dogged the strip for most of its life, and courts ordered it closed in 2012. It reopened in 2014 with a new sound wall and mandatory mufflers. It shut in 2020-21 during the pandemic and never reopened, and in 2021 speedway officials closed it for good.

Background

The drag strip sat beside a two-mile D-shaped oval built on the old Kaiser Steel Mill property near Fontana. The speedway hosted NASCAR every year from 1997 through 2023 and carried the Auto Club name from 2008 to 2023.
