Earl Blankenship began building a treated-dirt drag strip in March 1957 next to the old Lenoir-Morganton airport, built in 1945 and now Foothills Regional Airport. It was three-quarters of a mile long to allow quarter-mile racing. Whether it raced in 1957 isn’t known, but a race was held on March 9, 1958.
