Buffalo had a successful drag racing program somewhere nearby by 1953. In early 1954 the Dunkirk city council asked about it while considering a strip of its own to promote safe racing. There’s some evidence the races were on Ohio Street. One man interested in street racing history recalled stories of his father racing a ‘66 GTO 389 with three deuces at the “Ohio Street Drag Strip,” a long stretch of road downtown in a run-down old steel mill area. Garth Wilson also placed the strip on Ohio Street, on the east side of the Buffalo Skyway and below it, and said he still has an Ohio Street Drag Strip bumper sticker. Little else is known.
