In September 1958 the Turtles car club got permission to use a 3,000-foot by 75-foot runway at the city-owned airport in Ballinger for club drag racing, and the city and county helped improve the strip. The Runnels County Auto Club ran the opening meet on November 9, 1958, with nine car classes, two motorcycle classes, a top eliminator for each division and trophies for the winners.
