NHRA sanctioned drag racing in Bishop in 1963, and the Swedish magazine Start & Strip included the strip in a 1968 list of 325 U.S. drag strips. Races ran on the second Sunday of the month, almost certainly at the airport two miles east of Bishop, built around 1940. Jim Dominique, a founder of a later Bishop Drag Strip, dated that version’s start to 1974, under NHRA sanction.
