On March 28, 1954, the National Sports Car Races ran on the runways of the base, seven miles southeast of Austin. A quarter-mile drag race was held on one of the runways as well, where three young members of Austin’s Terrapin Club raced their hot rods on a marked-off strip to show spectators what drag racing was.
