This strip was sanctioned by the International Timing Association and raced every Saturday until the hot weather set in. Alan Weddle of Burlington, North Carolina, was the first to top 100 MPH there, winning top eliminator at an October 1957 race at 103.44 MPH. Allen Edwards, who went to the races with his father, a strip worker, helped pin down where it was: the present site of the Evans Correctional Institution, just northwest of Bennettsville.
