History

Jack and Ralph Walker built this strip so people could race and have a “good time,” and their wives, Sharron and Myralene, ran the concession stand. The track had a fatal crash in its first year of operation: on April 29, 1967, Jerry Bradford, 19, of Hanceville, lost control of his 1957 Chevrolet around mid-track, ran off the end of the strip and hit a light pole. In the 1970s the track paid racers such as Bill Jenkins, Don Nicholson and Bunny Burkett to appear. Fifty years after it opened, Jack still ran the place, with his grandson Russ Easterwood managing it and Sharron still working the concessions. A fan favorite is the Ole Tater Hauler, a wheelstanding 1953 GMC truck Jack built.
