The Victoria Quarter-Milers Club ran drag races every other week on the B.C. Cement Company road near Cobble Hill in Bamberton, which the company donated for the club’s use. The first race, on April 3, 1960, drew 2,000 spectators, and some later races drew more than 3,000. Admission was 50 cents, and what was left after expenses went into a fund to build a drag strip, with a goal of $350,000. By 1962 the club had raised $200,000. Fire danger halted racing for two months in 1960, but it resumed in late August. On June 11, 1961, Cliff West of Port Alberni had the fastest time, 14 seconds at over 90 mph, in his ‘59 Corvette. Usually called Cobble Hill, the strip became San Cobble Dragways in 1964. The club booked Jerry Ruth’s fuel dragster there in 1965. Once the new strip at Mill Bay opened, Cobble Hill was finished, and the last race ran on April 9, 1967.
