On August 4, 1962, drag races were held on a dirt airstrip next to the speedway’s old paved half-mile oval during the Great Smoky Mountain Motorcycle Rally, which drew riders from around the country. The speedway was built in 1951 and raced until 1969. North Buncombe High School stands on the site now.
