Arlington Speedway was a quarter-mile clay oval that ran from 1951 to 1962. In 1961 it added a paved, two-lane eighth-mile drag strip with electric timers for elapsed time and speed. Promoter Ed Ryan held the first race on June 8, hoping that with no other strip racing on Thursday nights he’d draw big crowds and fields. NASCAR supervised the racing together with the Timing Association of North America. The speedway closed in 1962, but drag racing has only been found in 1961.
