The Corpus Christi Timing Association held drag races on July 4, 1957, on a 4,500-foot runway at the airport four miles north of downtown Rockport. Sanctioned by the Alamo Timing Association and the American Hot Rod Association, the meet drew more than 300 racers and 5,000 spectators, and another race was set for August 25. In May 1958 Melvin Bevly set the track record of 148.11 MPH in his dragster. On July 4, 1958, the top eliminator won an 8-foot trophy, said to be the tallest drag racing trophy in the world, and Bobby Langley raised the strip record to 151.10 MPH. Races were also held on October 26 and November 30, 1958.
