Dennis Van Alstine managed Apollo Dragways, an eighth-mile asphalt strip eight miles south of Superior, east of Wisconsin Highway 35 and just north of Pattison State Park. He said the track was finally starting to turn a profit. But the asphalt hadn’t been laid properly and quickly broke up in the area’s harsh weather. The investors in Twin Ports Drag Racing Inc., Van Alstine among them, sued the contractor, who declared bankruptcy and left them out of their money. The site is now Copper Creek Motorsports Park, a kart and micro-sprint track that opened in 2006.
