Drag races first ran at the airport on Sunday, September 25, 1966, under AHRA sanction, and continued on the fourth Sunday of each month. The Andrews Boys Club sponsored them and used the money for its programs. The feature at the second club race in October 1966 was billed as Mr. Tomatoe in his ‘65 nitro-burning, wheel-smoking Dodge against Humpin’ Henry Jr. in his ‘66 Falcon with a red-hot hemi. A special benefit race on June 29, 1969, honored five Andrews residents killed in a 1966 plane crash. Officials from Odessa Raceway Park and the Hobbs drag racing association ran it.
