The Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association held a weekend drag race every year from 2001 to 2015 at the Alberni Valley Regional Airport, six miles northwest of Port Alberni. A runway expansion forced the association to look elsewhere, and in 2016 the City of Port Alberni allowed the race on Stamp Avenue. Without enough parking, the association canceled the 2019 race. The 2020 race was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, though early signs pointed to a return in 2021 if the pandemic allowed. The association had hoped racing could go back to the airport, but that didn’t happen.
