In a 2007 interview, Jack Hagemann (1916-2009) described drag racing in Alameda from 1931 to 1933. A paved road ran west from Webster Street to what later became the Naval Air Station. The Oakland auto club held drags there with no timing and no classes, and since it was private property, police left them alone.
