History

Mike Hane filed incorporation papers for this eighth-mile strip on November 9, 1971. It was built for $200,000 north of the Action Track, a half-mile dirt oval at the Vigo County Fairgrounds, now the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds. Bob Daniels, then director of NHRA’s Division 3, designed it, and it has been NHRA-sanctioned since it opened. It started with bleachers for 3,000 and a three-story timing tower. The grand opening ran on Saturday night, July 8, 1972, with Norm Paddack’s ‘72 Vega BB/FC from Indianapolis among the features. Ads that season urged women to have their guys take them where the action is. At a two-day event in August 1973, Bob Glidden won pro stock with a 5.76 at 122.28 mph. The track took the Wabash Valley Dragway name in 2002, was called Crossroads Dragway from 2009 to about 2018, and then went back to Wabash Valley. It still runs under NHRA sanction.
