Members of the Accomack-Northampton Competition Drag Club held three races on the airport’s south taxiway starting in November 1970. In mid-January 1971 the county supervisors put a temporary ban on drag racing there after the Virginia State Police complained the races weren’t being run properly. The ban was to stay until the problems were worked out with the club. Whether it was ever lifted isn’t known.
